CANTERBURY FESTIVAL BIG NOISE DAY

BEING HUMAN

A NEW WORK BY TONY CASTRO

Another Time is one of 100 solid cast-iron figures by Antony Gormley that explore the experience of Being Human and is sited in the sea in Margate adjacent to Turner Contemporary.

Tony Castro, Music Director of the Thanet Big Sing Community Choir, has taken inspiration from Another Time and in particular the theme of Being Human and has composed a suite of music for community choir which explores what it means to the members to sing in a choirand how this contributes to choir members’ sense of self and well-being.

Using evidence gained from the responses to a choirwide survey entitled Why Do You Sing, Tony has crafted beautiful music and words that reflect on the human condition as seen through the lens of choir members who completed the questionnaire who reported the positive benefits of being part of the choir, both mental and physical.

Happiness, joy and the positive effects on mood were the most frequently mentionedbenefits, and the sense of community is clearly something the choir members feel and appreciate. A sense of achievement and creativity is also notable in the responses, which will be heard in the moving music and songs Tony has composed
