Mount Ephraim Gardens in Canterbury

Ten acres of Edwardian gardens to explore within an 800 acre family owned estate and with stunning views over the surrounding countryside.
The topiary garden, Japanese rock garden and bridge, and rose garden combine to create a charming experience – a monument to an age gone by.

Other highlights include an arboretum, lake and water garden, many mature trees and our grass maze with a small children’s play area.
With an extensive collection of spring bulbs, trees and shrubs including Rhododendrons, many types of Camelias and Magnolias, the gardens offer something different throughout spring, summer and into autumn. No two visits are ever the same.

First laid out in the early 1900s by Willie and Jeanie Dawes, the gardens suffered through wartime neglect and damage from use by the army.

However, in the early 1950s Mary and Bill Dawes poured their hearts and souls into restoring them – with Mary involved heavily in the day-to-day running until her death in 2009 at the dignified age of 93.

The estate has been owned by the Dawes family since 1695 and is still run by members of the family today. It’s this family touch that lends Mount Ephraim Gardens their personal charm.
